Start with an identifiable grade
Record the manufacturer, complete grade name and document revision. Similar trade names or matching abbreviations are not enough to establish equivalence. Keep the agreed grade reference visible in the enquiry and order documents.
Read numbers with their test conditions
| Item | Question before comparison |
|---|---|
| Density | Are units and test methods stated? |
| Melt flow / melt index | Are temperature, load, units and test method the same? |
| Mechanical properties | What specimen and conditioning were used? |
| Processing guidance | Is this guidance for the intended process and equipment? |
Keep technical and transaction documents distinct
A technical data sheet describes the grade. For a purchase, separately agree which batch identification, quality records and shipping documents will accompany delivery. Do not assume that every document is included simply because a data sheet is available.
Validate a proposed substitution
Prepare a comparison against the existing grade, identify mandatory performance requirements and agree a trial plan. Document the decision before a production change or purchase commitment. A low price alone is not a material specification.
A specification-led purchase checklist
- Manufacturer and full grade code.
- Intended process and final product requirements.
- Requested documents and packaging.
- Quantity, destination and commercial terms.
